SCHOLARSHIPS

The scholarships provided by the Optimist International Foundation are all competition-based scholarships for post-high school education. All of the contests begin at the Club level and end at the District level. Our club is the Coronado Optimist Club and our District is the New Mexico-West Texas District. Grab these opportunities to take hold of your future.

CUB SCOUTS

Our Cub Scout Pack includes boys from Placitas, Carroll, and Bernalillo Elementary Schools in southeastern Sandoval County. We meet 7-8 PM, on Wednesday nights at the Latter Day Saints Church Center in Bernalillo, just west of I-25's Exit 240.

IZZY JUAREZ

Following an Optimist International tradition, Mr. Izzy Juarez instituted an Optimist 'Student of the Month' program at Puesta del Sol Elementary School in Rio Rancho during the 1990’s.

His monthly program recognized students who had improved in some way—attendance, homework, behavior, individual performance. The honored students and their families were invited to luncheon to celebrate the students’ improvement.
The Coronado Optimist Club modeled its annual program on Mr. Juarez’s example. Mr. Juarez was able to attend in 2015 COC’s first Izzy Juarez Keep Up the Good Work Award, just months before he died.

Izzy Juarez was a life member and former president of the Northwest Optimist Club in Albuquerque, and an Albuquerque Public Schools’ elementary school principal.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES

Coronado Optimist Club is proud to help our local Bernalillo Middle School students by collaborating and participating in school-supplies collection events.

THANKSGIVING

Helping make Thanksgiving possible. Our Coronado Optimist Club helps collect food donations for families in need. We have helped over 50+ families and continue to come up with ideas that will provide for more in the future.

BIKE SAFETY

"We will do a lot during those two hours," says David Gardner, Vice President of the Coronado Optimist Club.
Participating youngsters will receive free helmits and have their bikes made safer. Brakes, tires and steering mechanisms will be checked.
The Optimist Bike Safety Rodeo includes an obstacle course and skills tests. Intended most specifically for third graders, no one will be turned away.
At noon, prizes and medals were awarded to the young winners. Participation in the event is free and was held 10 a.m. until noon, Saturday, March 19, at the Pavillion in Rotary Park, in Bernalillo.
